Dissolution Process of Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)
- Begin with clean water in a suitable mixing vessel.
- Initiate high-speed agitation to create a strong vortex.
- Gradually add CMC powder into the vortex under continuous stirring.
- Avoid direct dumping of powder, as it may lead to lump formation due to improper dispersion.
- Continue high-speed mixing until the solution is fully hydrated and a uniform gel is formed.
- Allow sufficient time for complete hydration, depending on the grade and application.
- The prepared CMC gel can then be used as per formulation requirements.
Note: The concentration of CMC may be adjusted based on the desired viscosity and end-use application.
- Product Overview
What is CMC?
Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (SCMC or CMC) or Cellulose Gum is an anionic water-soluble polymer derived from cellulose. It is made water soluble by a chemical reaction that introduces carboxymethyl groups (-CH₂-COOH) along the cellulose chain, enabling hydration of the molecule.
Manufacturing Process
CMC is produced from cellulose pulp, monochloroacetic acid (MCA), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The product is then purified with organic solvents, dried, sifted, and packed in bags. It appears as a white to creamish colored powder with very fine particles or granules.
Physical Properties
- Odorless and Tasteless
- Hygroscopic Powder
- Readily dissolves in water to form colloidal solution
- Insoluble in organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, propanol, acetone)
